The painting reflects the moment of the last supper in which Jesus announces that between the disciples there is a traitor. Four groups of three personages form where each one shapes a human emotion: stupor, wrath, fear...
It is known that Leonardo used real people like models for the personages of the mural. The second beginning by the left was himself as it is possible to be seen in the image.
This is what tells Mateo Bandello, novice of the convent on the execution of The Last Supper: "He arrived very early, he got on the scaffold and he began to work. Sometimes remained without releasing the paintbrush from the dawn to the late afternoon, painting right along and forgetting from eating and drinking . Other times he did not touch the paintbrush during two, three or four days, but he spent several hours in front of the work with the crossed arms, considering figures in silence. Also I remember than in certain occasion, at noon, when the sun was in its zenith, he abandoned with haste the court in Vecchia, where he was working on his superb horse of clay, and, without taking care of himself, came directly to Santa Maria Grazie, he perched in the scaffold, caught the paintbrush, you gave one or two brushstrokes and went away ".
